Baptism

As parents, it is exciting to help our children begin to discover what it means to be a follower of Jesus, and in the process, we come to know the Father's love for us as beloved sons and daughters. Deciding to have your child baptized means that you are willing to take on the responsibility to raise your child in the Catholic faith. You are committed to nurturing their faith by practicing the faith yourself and setting a good example for them of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Baptism is the beginning of your child’s journey of faith, which will last a lifetime.
 

Scheduling & Registration for Baptism at Holy Archangels Parish

Please call the Parish Office at 847-885-7700, or stop by the Parish during office hours to register your child for Baptism.

Please have the following documents ready when registering:

• A copy of baby's birth certificate
• A copy of both parents' photo ID

Baptisms are celebrated:

• On the 2nd Sunday of each month at 12:30 PM at St. Matthew's.
• On the 4th Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM at St. Hubert's.
• Within Mass, but by arrangement with the parish office.

Please note, a requested date is not a confirmed date until you receive a confirmation from the parish office. 

Baptism Preparation Meeting for Parents

As parents, you are required to attend a Baptism Preparation Meeting before your child’s Baptism. These are held in-person, the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM (Last virtual Baptism Preparation Meeting is April 29, 2025). Godparents are not required to attend but are always welcome.

This is a time to get a deeper sense of the meaning of the sacrament and to become familiar with the baptismal ceremony. You are welcome to attend this meeting even before your baby is born, if you wish. Once you register for baptism, you will be sent an invite to join online. Parents should be registered as parishioners at Holy Archangels Parish.

Choosing Godparents

When deciding on godparents, you should consider Catholic relatives or friends who would be a good Christian role model for your child, who gives witness to God in their everyday lives, and who is willing to maintain a long-term relationship with your child.

One godparent is necessary, though common practice is for there to be two godparents, one of each gender. In order to fulfill canon law, at least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic who has received all three sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation). Accordingly, he or she must produce a letter from their home parish stating that he or she is a practicing Catholic and is fit to stand in as a godparent at Holy Archangels Parish. 
Additionally, all godparents must be at least 16 years of age and, most importantly, must live "a life of faith which benefits the role to be undertaken." In the case that a godparent is unable to attend the baptismal ceremony, a proxy for the ceremony may be chosen.

Older Children & Adults Baptism

Older children and adults may receive the sacrament of Baptism at the Easter Vigil after a period of faith formation and discernment. At Holy Archangels Parish, this would be done through OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) or Sacramental Catch-Up for Kids. Please contact the parish office for more details.
