Standing in prayer with those in the RCIA is a privilege and responsibility to the parish community. Just as the apostles were vital to the building and growth of the Church, parishioners are vital to the process in forming our new Catholics. You are the face of the Church, and you represent the parish community in a very special way. If you are present at the Scrutiny liturgies, please take part by laying your hands on the head of the Elect and praying over them. This ancient symbol of forgiveness, healing and empowerment speaks the truth that the Church is a reconciling community. It is also a humble gesture for us, for we, too, acknowledge that we need to be reconciled. We are not remade by our own efforts, but by the power of the Spirit to whom we open ourselves as we pray for these elect. |
